So for the past few months we have been going back and forth about whether or not and where to reopen JuJu Gallery as a storefront. I have been very happy with it inside Bad Granny's as we also sell vintage and retro apparel. Recently my friend's cafe and favorite place to eat( due to my gluten intolerance and her yummy gluten free goodness!) had to announce the closing of it's doors which saddened me greatly. However on the positive side this opened up a perfect space for something I have been planning for a long time that allows us to continue and expand JuJu Gallery and well as having the funky urban hip and so on , buy sell trade clothing store I have wanted to start here based off the design of places like www.ragorama.com and www.clothingwarehouse.com that we had back home. So we signed the lease yesterday and it looks like something new will bloom out of our friends perfect Plaza District location and beginning mid September OKC will have a new store called Dig It! which will do buy -sell-trade on vintage , retro, and one of a kind urban fashion along with a small selection of select music, movies, books, and zines that drive the same culture. ANd of course since the space is split up so well JuJu Gallery will still be a part of it and we will be able to expand and include more artists. There is still one little twist we are working on but that announcement will only come when it is finalized so there ya go, look for a new place to accent the already awesome shopping experience you can get in the Plaza District starting in September!

Last week we headed down to Dallas for the Deep Ellum Outdoor Market that happens every third Saturday in Deep Ellum. It was pretty awesome and we had alot of fun. At the intersection of Indiana and Malcomb X they have a couple parking lots that they have all of the vendors set up in. There is a great selection of vintage/retro merch, art, jewelry, screened tees, lps and more. It happens from 11-5pm and the next one we will be heading down to is on May 21st.

So this friday( well technically Saturday) is our one year anniversary at JuJu Gallery and to celebrate during Plaza District's Live on the Plaza we will be hosting a show featuring Chastine Edwards of GroundUp Art. She makes the coolest creepy jewelry and crochet critters. She can crochet just about any of your favorite Horror characters!

This Monday November 1st from 5-11 I will be set up at Living Arts of Tulsa's annual Dia de los Muertos Festival. I will have loads of CrYpT-o-LiCiOuS goodies and a great selection of accessories from Vital Style Creations for sell. It is an awesome event with loads to do for your whole family. It is the closest Oklahoma gets to the real deal with the big shrines, sugar skull decorating, fire performers, skeleton parade, vendors, live music, and more. So be there! This Weekend!

This weekend we have Live on the Plaza Friday night from 6pm-11p and Saturday is our annual Plaza District Festival and we will be open all day 12noon-10pm. The festival is great and they close off the street and bring in ALL LOCAL OKLAHOMA artists and musicians. There are also loads of kids activities with interactive art for the kiddies to do and during the day all sorts of entertainment on the stage like Flamenco dancing, etc. The bands play from 7p-10p with Pretty Black Chains closing out the festival starting at 9pm. All the shops in the neighbordhood will be open late until 10pm so come on out!

For this month's Live on the Plaza at JuJu will bring back special guest and horror author Dennis Mcdonald , show new works by artist Felix Matos(a great selection of horror movie art he has done recently !), accessories from Tulsa designer VitalStyle Creations ( Natasha Lynn), Osteo-oddities and jewelry by Custom Cranium, "Muerte " ladies by BlueShift Art, Day of the Dead art by Crypt-o-Licious creations, creepy goodies from Chastine Edwards, and comics from Art of Destruction. OOh and we have just picked up a new zine by two local high school gals- this is the release day for it so haven't seen it but very excited for them and can't wait!

So there ya go , so much to do this Live you must come out! Plus it is our neighbors No Regrets Tattoo's 2 yr anniversary and one of the artist is doing $40 Oklahoma themed tattoos and her flash for this is awesome! Bad Granny's down the street has filled itself up for Back to School so you'll also have to check out those bargains!

Okay so Karen Martin(aka Art of Destruction) just made my day when she dropped off her two publications from Literati press! The first reason is her the publication she has written and illustrated called World Wide Tribune. It contains the following things that I personally enjoy which are horror, rockabilly, kitsch, and reference to trashy grocery shelf rags(yes I am guilty and have actually advertised in the back of those at one lifetime..) Anyway so bias interest aside it was very well put together but with an actual handdrawn look you may miss from old school indie comics(ah whatever happen to Baby Sue...) . The story is this issue is based within Oklahoma rockabilly culture and it written with a fluid storyline that has a definite ending but still leaves you wanting more (the way a comic should!) Ooh and there are pin-up gals in it, what more could you want!
Now the second is a publication illustrated and adapted by Art of Destruction based of the newest novel by Charles Martin and Will Weinke. It is basically the illustrated adaptation of the first chapter of the novel which I have to say being someone who is usually weary of fiction novels, this way of promoting the novel has definitely drawn me in and now I want to read the novel, so super kudos on that! The style is done in the same way as World Wide with its slick pages and handdrawn illustrations. I personally don't use digital illustration so I really appreciate seeing someone get out there and still use pencil, pen and paper.I think it is okay to clean up a drawing on the computer but I prefer to still see the effort and artistry of handdrawn work. Ok so the story is totally just enough to really leave your brain wondering what happens next and what direction it will go. You will have to buy it to get the story becuase I think giving too much away takes away from your experience of reading it, but I am sitting here wondering will it stay this funny, will it go scary, what are these characters in for and so on.
So you must check it out and now you get pick up both of these at JuJu Gallery and hopefully we can get these guys out for the next Live on the Plaza June 11th so folks can meet them. OOh but if you can't make it here to check them out then you can see them at Soonercon next weekend or go directly to their website at www.literatipressok.com

Alot of folks have been asking if you can shop online from our website so I am posting my etsy store link on here which has a small selection of Crypt-o-Licious creations on it and since there have been enough request I will add some more. For now I will not be selling off the JuJu Gallery website but in addition to my goods, many of our JuJu Gallery featured artists have Etsy sites of their own and Felx Matos has his own site where you can see and contact him to buy his paintings. I will make sure to gather all their sites and add links in another post later.

Okay what's new... Felix Matos is kind enough to be helping me with a new website so be sure to keep checking www.jujugallery.com as we build it up, add new content, etc and also we are finally looking in to bringing in more work by other artists in JuJu. These designers will of course be finely picked to go along with the style and uniqueness we are trying to create in the shop and most important, be a little curious! Shows.. We had Live on the PLaza last week which was good fun as always and then last night I set up at Assimilation 2 yr anniversary in Tulsa which was fun and we were able to get lots of cards handed out and promote the next Tulsa show Crypt-o-Licious will be at which is Underground Horror Film fest at the Marquee on July 10th which should be awesome and will have a great selection of vendors in addition to same scare a load right into your pants independent horror films/filmmakers. I am excited, I love independent film, but I really love independent horror films!
Also upcoming on June 11th is the next Live on the Plaza and our them is Living Dead on the Plaza featuring new works by Felix Matos and Crypt-o-Licious creations. I am also working to bring in some new artists to show that night within the same creep field so check back and as we get closer I will post with a list of what all will be going on that night.
In August it also looks like we will be setting up at Texas Fearfest and their theme this year is 30 years of Friday the 13th( not my favorite horror film , but should still be a good crowd) adn they are calling it Camp Blood. It will be in Lewisburg , TX and it is set up next to a lake where they will be having actual camp activities! So yeah if your in Texas and you want to check out Crypt-o-Licious creations , I will be there with horror writer Dennis McDonald and artist Felix matos.

We have had a lot going on in April(most of it out of town) and we have been working on some improvements for the shop. So with that in mind our apologies for not being open much in April.
We will be open this week April 21-24(wed-sat) from 12noon-7pm and next week Wed April 28th and thur April 29th from 12-7p. We will be closed april 30th and May 1st in order to be apart of a couple different events. One is MAY 1st which is the Rock and Roll garage sale at the 66Bowl. Everyone should come out to that as it will be a blast with great bands, great merch, good times!
We are getting into festival season and there are quite a few Saturdays we may be closed for events in the next couple months so please check this site for updates but other than that we are back to regular hours as of May 5th every Wed-Sat 12-7pm.

Felix got back from a weekend away at Allcon and brought by a super swell new Bride of Frankenstein( yes I just wiped some drool from my mouth I love this piece so much) , Poe, Betty Page(great colors in this one), Creature from the Black Lagoon, and one of his best classic monsters one yet which is one long painting with the trio Frankenstein, Mummy, and Dracula which is based off the old poster art. They are all so sweet you just absolutely see them in person, really you must...

Live on the PLaza in Plaza District OKC is this Friday December 11th from 7pm-11pm. We will be staying open late until 11pm to celebrate and to host Balcum Rancum puppetry with a puppet show called " Mr. Pickles Birthday ". The puppet show will start at 9pm , but late shopping in the Plaza District will be available 7pm-11 pm plus many of the businesses are having holiday festivities and live entertainment that night too, so come on out to the Plaza District this Friday!
The district is located on NW 16th st between Blackwelder and Indiana and we are located right in the middle on a little strip of N Gatewood just off 16th across from the Lyric Theatre.

JuJu is now open for biz and we are open Fridays and Saturdays 11a-7pm or by appointment.
We had a great opening with horror author Dennis McDonald promoting his collection of stories called 13 Nightmares , artist Felix Matos, artist Amanda Martinez , and even had a visit from Dennis and Felix's pal Count Gregore.
Check back later this week and we should have some pictures posted from the opening.

Also coming up the whole Plaza District will be having a stress free "Black Friday" shopping day on November 27th and all the shops will be opening an hour early at 10am and having various promotions and serving cider and treats.

Fall is show season!

We are halfway thru the fall show/festival season and have had a great time at some of the events. As I always like to collaborate and share with other artists at each event I set up with another artist. At Dustbowl Market in Norman I set up with Spiritual Sparkles.

The next show was a few weeks later also in Norman and was Pagan Pride day where I set up with St. John's Casket Company.

The weekend of October 3rd we managed to

be at 2 places at once and set up with Felix Matos

at the Sci-Fi Horror convention in Tulsa and then

also at the Plaza District Festival with Spiritual

And finally this last weekend I put a few piece in the Choppers Halloween show in Bethany on Saturday nite and headed to Indie Emprium in Tulsa Fri and Sat with Spiritual Sparkles ! The next show I have a piece in is the Longboard show at DNA Gallery on October 23rd and then the Dia De Los Muertos festival in Tulsa on November 1st. Be sure to check those out!

JuJu Gallery opens Friday November 13th, 2009

JuJu Gallery will be opening at 1612 N. Gatewood Ave on Nov 13th during Live on the Plaza. We have our last outdoor market for the season in October and then all the activity moves indoors for the winter. JuJu Gallery will house works by Crypt-O-Licious creations and Spiritual Sparkles on a regular basis and will feature various other local artist and indie crafters seasonally. so be sure to check it out!

The next outdoor indie market and Live on the Plaza is Friday August 14th.There are lots of artists that will be out in addition to several bands playing at the various venues in the Plaza District.
In addition Crypt-O-Licious creations will be a participating in the Dustbowl Market in Norman at Campus Corner on Aug 29th. I have been working hard to get lots of new merch ready for the Fall show season so folks should come on down to eith Live on the Plaza or the Dustbowl market to see the new goods!

In Sept we will be moving into a live in space in the Plaza District which will allow us to have a small mini gallery boutique which will be called JuJu Gallery. Look for us to be open October 3rd just in time for the Plaza festival!

Every 2nd friday House of Craft sponsors an outdoor Indie Craft Bazaar as part of the Plaza District's Live on the Plaza. It runs outdoors from March- October. Each month we have around 15 different artists/handcrafted vendors that set up to show off and sell their handmade wares.In addition the businesses in the Plaza District feature live music and artists and stay open later those nights.The Live on the Plaza runs every second Friday from 7pm-11pm on 16th ave between Indiana and Gatewood.

JuJu is a new line of products and creations that are to begin being released in March 2009. JuJu is meant to be a various selection of curious goods and vintage inspired mercantile that is made from 95% recycled materials. We even work to pick up our paints, thread, fabric etc second hand if possible. Every series will include a collaboration with other artists and indie crafters and for this first Spring 2009 series I am working with designer Adonica Rutherford. With this blog are examples of a few of her personal designs she created for clients under the name Stargaze.
